This week, Blessed Sacrament Parish, Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, Forward Latino and Milwaukee Brewers players William Contreras, Jackson Chourio, and coach Nestor Corredor came together to launch the United for Venezuela Emergency Relief Effort in response to the tragic earthquakes impacting the country on June 24. The disaster left more than 1,450 killed and tens of thousands still missing. As Father Javier states “This earthquake came with deep wounds in this country. For us to come together and help one another, we are raising our voice for human dignity.”
The relief drive is collecting nonperishable food, water, and everyday essentials such as deodorant, blankets, diapers, sleeping bags, temporary household products and hygiene items for families impacted. Darryl Morin, President of Forward Latino, reminds attendees and volunteers of their generosity and how this is “God’s grace coming together to help the people.”
Representing Blessed Sacrament Parish and School, second grade teacher, Litza Janowski, highlights the importance of helping this initiative stating “this is Catholic social teaching at its core.” The overwhelming support from Mayor Cavalier Johnson, city alderman, Brewers players, and parish leadership, has truly demonstrated the compassion that defines our community.
As Catholics, we are called to put faith into action to help those in need. We instill the value of service in our students and families and encourage them to love one another as the Gospel calls us to do. We are grateful for our Seton family including Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady Queen of Peace. Donations will continue to be collected all week through Friday, July 3 between 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Blessed Sacrament Parish located at 41st and Oklahoma in Milwaukee. Please help make a meaningful difference for those in Venezuela during this difficult time.
